FLORENCE, ITALY, JUNE 15TH Final between Rossi of Santa Maria Novella and Blue Azzurri of Santa Croce. Clash between players. The Calcio Storico Fiorentino (Florence Historical Football), also known as Calcio in Costume (costume football), is a team game with a ball that has remote origins and today is one of the oldest Florentine traditions. The games are preceded by a procession from Piazza Santa Maria Novella to Piazza Santa Croce, where the playing field is set up. The game of Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a challenge between the four quarters of the city. The matches are played in 16th century costumes and every year, a tournament is organised involving the city's four historic neighbourhoods: the 'Whites' of Santo Spirito, the 'Blues' of Santa Croce, the 'Reds' of Santa Maria Novella and the 'Greens' of San Giovanni. Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a tough, violent game that fuses together three different sports: rugby, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. The matches last fifty minutes and are played on a rectangular field covered with sand. On this ground, two teams consisting of twenty-seven players on each side face each other. In the centre of the back net, the Captain's and Bishop's tents are erected, whose task it is to intervene in brawls to pacify the spirits of their players. The match begins with the ball being thrown by the Baller on the centre line and the following 'firing' of the culverins that greet the opening of hostilities. From this moment on, the kickers of the two teams will try (by whatever means) to carry the ball to the back of the opponent's field and deposit it in the net, thus scoring the 'hunt' (goal)./Sipa USA *** No Sales in France and Italy *** 2024.06.15 Florencja sport Calcio Storico Fiorentino Foto Juan Ignacio Calcagno/Insidefoto/SIPA USA/PressFocus !!!
